The Challenge

Most file conversion apps require uploading files to remote servers, raising serious privacy concerns, adding latency, and limiting offline usability. Building a converter that handles hundreds of format combinations entirely on-device -- spanning images, video, audio, PDFs, documents, and more -- demands careful architecture to avoid memory issues and maintain responsive performance across the full range of iOS hardware.

Our Solution

We designed an actor-based provider architecture using Swift concurrency -- 13 specialized actors (Image, Video, Audio, PDF, Document, and more) each handle their own format domain with full thread safety. A TaskRouter dispatches work to the right provider, while a PipelineManager chains multi-step conversions. Device-adaptive concurrency scales from 3 parallel jobs on iPhone to 6 on M-series iPads. Core ML models are downloaded on-demand so the app stays lightweight while offering powerful AI features like photo restoration, upscaling, and colorization.
